Doubling InstrumentsEarlier, we discussed how the violin section can be divided so that a melody is played in two different octaves at the same time, giving more strength to the sound. We can also have the violins play a melody with other instruments as well. Woodwinds and brass benefit greatly by having their melody doubled by the violins. Doubling the Violins with WoodwindsA flute-violins combination works beautifully for high range melodies:
The flute gives the string sound some weight while the violins add a slight sheen to the flute sound. In the mid range, violins together with clarinets or oboes bring to a melody a soprano-voice-like quality:
