Doubling Instruments (cont.)

Doubling the Violins with Brass

Trumpets also sound richer playing a melody in the same octave as the violins - if it's not too high a part.

If the violins need to play very high, the trumpets can play one octave below the violins. For an absolutely grand melody, try doubling the violins with the French horns.

The horns can play in the octave starting on Middle C. The violins can play in the first and second octaves above the horns.

As you begin to experiment with your orchestration, you will discover more and more great instrumental combinations that include the violins. We remind you to refer back to the String Section chapter to encourage you to include all the various string techniques for your violin writing.
