About Our Suggested Ranges
|
Before we begin our discussion of the violin section, listen to what the solo violin sounds like: Although a solo violin has a more fragile tone than a full violin section, its sound is more intimate. UsageWhile the violin's higher strings tend to create a brighter sound than the lower strings, melodies, harmonies and embellishments can be performed on any of the four strings. 1st and 2nd ViolinsAs we mention in our String Section chapter, the violins are often divided into two sections: the 1st violins and the 2nd violins. The 1st violins usually play the higher parts. Often, the 1st violins play a melody in a high range while the second violins play the same part one octave lower. This gives the melody a richer, more powerful sound. In the following example, the 1st violins play a short melody by themselves in bar 1. In bar 2, they repeat the melody, but this time the 2nd violins play along one octave lower: In bar 3, the 1st violins play by themselves. Then, in bar 4, the 2nd violins once again play along one octave lower:
You will hear that the melody sounds stronger in bars 2 and 4 when it is played in 2 different octaves: |
