Tuba section

The modern tuba section now contains only one tuba. But this is more than enough to furnish the bass support it provides to the orchestra. In fact, that is the tuba's primary function. Like the stringed bass, the tuba provides the harmonic foundation that the rest of the orchestra is built upon. Usually the tuba doubles the stringed basses or plays the root note of a harmony. While it does play melodies and can play relatively fast notes, playing the tuba takes a fair amount of wind that requires constant replenishing.
