Brass Section Members (cont.)French Horn sectionThe French horn section is typically in use more often than the other brass section members. This is because their sound is most useful in quiet, tranquil moments, as well as loud, vigorous ones. This is not to say that the other brass members can't contribute quiet tones of music. It's just that the French horns blend better with softer string and woodwind passages. There are usually four French horns in the French horn section. Notice that in orchestral scores, the French horns' staves are placed above the trumpets, even though the trumpets play higher sounding notes: This is just another indication of the importance of the French horns. A more complete analysis of the usage of French horns can be found in our French horn chapter. |
