Other Minor Scales

Earlier we mentioned that there are three forms of minor scales: the natural minor scale, the harmonic minor scale and the melodic minor scale. The harmonic minor and melodic minor scales are very similar to the natural minor scale that we've been working with. Let's take a look at the subtle differences between all three minor scales. We will remain in our key of a minor:

You can see in this chart that the harmonic minor scale raises the 7th note - the G - to a G#. The melodic minor scale includes that raised 7th note and also adds a raised sixth note - an F#.

In any minor key, you have many choices for melody notes and chords. You can stay in one form of the minor scale - such as the natural minor scale - or you can switch to the harmonic or melodic minor.
