Introduction

In Composition 101, we discovered that you can create musical compositions by simply placing chords and melodies together. In that section, we based most of our melodies and chords on the Major scale. And of course you can create those melodies and chords in any major key. But we can use different structures besides major scales.

Minor scales (natural, harmonic and melodic), lydian scales, pentatonic scales, whole tone scales and diminished scales are all available for us to use. When using these scales, we can employ the same methods of constructing melodies and chords that we used with the major scale.

But as you will soon see, some of these scales don't offer us the variety of chords that the major scale offers. So, we will find other creative ways to use those scales. And you will discover that you can mix several different types of scales into the same composition.

For the vast majority of the musical examples in this Beyond the Major Scale section, we will not perform chords. In other words, no harmony will be complete at any one moment. Instead, we will use arpeggios and scales to create the harmony. This is to allow the individual notes of each new scale to be heard clearly.
