Harmonizing the MelodyBesides beginning and ending the piece with an a minor chord, we emphasize the a minor sound one more way. Every time we end a phrase with the a minor chord, we add a synthesizer accompaniment. We first hear this in bar 2: As you can see, the synthesizer merely plays the individual notes of the a minor chord. One additional element gives the melody a fuller sound. Although we didn't include this written part in the full score, you will actually hear a second electric guitar softly harmonizing the melody. Listen to bars 5 through 8 when the melody is played as a solo electric guitar part. Now listen to that same section with the second electric guitar harmonizing the melody: Notice how much fuller the melody sounds when it is harmonized. And every note of that harmony part is drawn from the accompanying chord. |
