The Bassoon Section

The bassoon section consists of two bassoons and a contrabassoon. Like the bass clarinet, the bassoon is often used to double the cello or bass part. As a reinforcement for these lower strings, the bassoon tone is much more effective than that of the bass clarinet. The staccato sound of a bassoon also blends perfectly with the pizzicato notes of a cello and is often used in this combination.

But equally important is the use of the bassoon for melodies and counter lines. Its unique, expressive tone can turn an ordinary musical moment into an memorable event.

The contrabassoon lowers the range of the bassoon by one octave. It is often used to double the bass part, and provides a heavy bottom to the orchestral sound. A more complete analysis of the usage of the bassoon and contrabassoon can be found in the Bassoon chapter.
