General Information

The bassoon is arguably the most unique sounding of all the instruments in the orchestra. Its tone could be described as evocative, mysterious, ancient and to some extent, haunting. It can also sound lighthearted and even comical. Like the oboe and the English horn, the bassoon is a double reed instrument. Its function is to perform melodies as well as provide reinforcement to other instruments.

Notation

The bassoon is notated in the Bass clef at concert pitch. Occasionally, parts in the bassoon's high range are written in the Tenor clef.

Range

The bassoon's lowest note is Bb1 (two octaves plus a Major 2nd below Middle C). Its highest note depends upon the player. While it can play a few notes higher, a safe top note would be C5 (one octave above Middle C).
