The Bassoon and the Cellos

Very often, the bassoon's staccato sound is called upon to reinforce cello pizzicatos. Listen to what cello pizzicatos sound like by themselves:

Now listen to that same part, with the bassoon reinforcing the cellos:

You can hear how much fuller the sound has become with the addition of the bassoon.

The combination of bassoon and cello is very common in orchestral writing. Their note range is almost identical and their sounds beautifully complement one another. Listen to this example of a legato melody played by the bassoon and cellos:

Clearly these two instrumental sounds work together. Experiment with combining other instruments with the bassoon. You will discover new and pleasing sound combinations.
