The Contrabassoon (cont.)

Listen to the sound of the contrabassoon in its lowest register:

In its middle register, the contrabassoon sounds very similar to the bassoon.

The contrabassoon's thick buzzing sound is easily recognizable. The contrabassoon provides excellent reinforcement when the string basses require more power. But make sure to give the contrabassoonist enough time to breath and rest.

Final Thoughts

The bassoon has a wonderfully mysterious and quirky quality. Although you can't always detect it in orchestral passages, its absence would be noticeable.

Besides offering unique moments of melody, it is essential for reinforcing other instruments in the orchestra. If you have a small string section, the bassoon can add weight to the basses, cellos and even violas. The more you experiment with combinations of the bassoon and other instruments, the more you will want to write for the bassoon.
