The Clarinet Section

The clarinet section consists of two clarinets and a bass clarinet. The clarinet is a Bb instrument. This means that it sounds a whole step lower than it is written.

The clarinet is an extremely versatile instrument. It has a wide dynamic range, from very loud to practically inaudible. It can sound very somber and menacing in its lowest range and quite comical in its highest range. The clarinet's rich sound quality blends well with other instruments. Yet its pure, clean sound as a solo instrument is just as desirable.

The bass clarinet plays an octave lower than the clarinet. It sounds one octave plus a whole step lower than it is written. Depending on the setting, the bass clarinet can also sound menacing, as well as comical. It is also very effective as the reinforcement of a cello or bass part. A more complete analysis of the usage of the clarinets can be found in the Clarinet chapter.
