Final Thoughts

Above all else, the woodwind section must be appreciated for the unique voice of each of its members. There is a uniformity of sound amongst the members of the string section. In the brass section, you could say that the trumpet sound is an extension of the trombone sound, and that the French horn sound is an extension of the tuba sound.

But each of the four groups in the woodwind section has its own unique sound. The flute doesn't sound like the oboe or the clarinet. Neither does the bassoon. Recognize, enjoy and take advantage of the many colors of the woodwind section. Your music will be all the richer for it.
