Using the Raised 4th (cont.)

You might ask, "If I need a chord with an F# in it so that I can emphasize the raised 4th in the key of C, why do I choose a D chord instead of a B chord or an F# chord – each of which also has an F# in it?" The answer is that the D chord has more notes in common with the key of C (our current key) than the B or F# chords:

This means that when we alternate from the C chord to the D chord, the sound is less jarring than if we went from a C chord to a B or F# chord.

If this is all too much theory, then simply remember that if you want a pleasant chord that contains a raised 4th of the key in which you're working (in this case C), simply go up from the root one whole step (in this case, to D). Alternating quickly between these two chords creates a light, lively vamp.
