Using the Raised 4th (cont.)

While the low strings and the bassoon play their ostinato, the violins act as the rhythm section playing a steady chug-chug-chug-like pattern – almost like a rhythm guitar keeping a steady strumming rhythm:

The violins' part serves two purposes. First, it provides a steady motor to propel the piece along. Second, it gives us another opportunity to use the raised 4th – this time in the underlying harmony.

The violin chords alternate between a reduced C chord and a D chord. The reason for using the D chord in this C Major vamp is to hear the note F# in the D Major chord:

This F# once again is the raised 4th in the key of C.
