Constructing a Minor Chord

We can construct a minor chord from within a minor scale. We start by picking any minor scale. Minor scales come in three different types - the natural minor scale, the harmonic minor scale and the melodic minor scale. The first five notes are the same in all three scales, so any version of the minor scale will work for this exercise.

Let's start with a simple c natural minor scale:

The root (C), 3rd (Eb) and 5th (G) notes of that scale comprise the three notes of a minor chord:

When played simultaneously, these three notes create a c minor chord. Let's listen to the sound of this chord:
