Other Uses of Minor Chords

In our first example using minor chords, the music had a sad quality to it. This reflects one common way of using minor chords. But minor chords can also contribute a pleasant sound when used in the right places.

So far, we've discussed the root chord, the IV chord and the V chord in both major and minor keys. But there are also a ii chord, a iii chord and a vi chord. These are minor chords, and they play a very important role within the framework of a Major key.

As the following chart indicates, the I chord (the "root" chord) is built up from the note C, which is the 1st note (or "root" note) of the scale:

We can also see that the IV chord has the 4th note (F) of the scale as its root note and the V chord has the 5th note (G) of the scale as its root note. Therefore, the ii chord has the 2nd note (D) of the scale as its root note, the iii chord has the 3rd note (E) of the scale as its root note, and the vi chord has the 6th note (A) of its scale as the root note.
