Trills

The last string technique we will discuss is the trill. A trill is performed by simply alternating between two notes as rapidly as possible (usually a minor 2nd or Major 2nd apart). This is basically no different than a trill you would play on a piano or flute.

What makes a trill performed by a string section different than one performed on a piano or flute is the number of players simultaneously playing that one trill. Because there are so many players in a string section (the violins alone can have thirty players), no player will play the trill at the exact same tempo. This creates a flurry of sound that works wonderfully in tense moments...
