Final ThoughtsAs we have just discovered, the string section is capable of producing a wide variety of sounds. While you could certainly compose music for a string section by merely having all the players bowing normally, you will add great depth and color to your writing by employing numerous playing techniques. This is not to say that you should be constantly showing off how many surprises you have in your bag of tricks. A little bit goes a long way. As you compose more and more for strings, you will know just when to use various techniques to bring out the most in your music. Remember, the string section creates the framework for the entire orchestra. The more you understand stringed instruments, the finer your orchestral writing will be.
