Performance Techniques (cont.)

Pizzicato

A stringed instrument doesn't always have to be bowed to produce a sound. You can pluck the string with your finger to create a bright, percussive like sound, similar to the plucking of a guitar string. This style of playing is called pizzicato.

In musical scores, you will see this term abbreviated as pizz. When you want to return to normal bowing, you write the word arco above the musical stave. It should be noted that the larger the stringed instrument, the larger the strings and, therefore, the longer the sound is sustained when playing pizzicato. It should also be pointed out that you can't perform a musical passage as fast in pizzicato as you can by bowing it.
