Bowed Tremolo

Another common way that stringed instruments produce sound is with the bowed tremolo. To create this effect, the bow rapidly moves back and forth continuously in very short gestures. This very dramatic effect brings to the music a suspenseful, unsettled sound.

Yet it can also be used in light, impressionistic music to create a delicate rustling effect.

Using the bowed tremolo adds great color variety to the string sound and to the overall orchestral palette.
