The Celesta

The celesta can be thought of as a softer sounding glockenspiel. Therefore, unlike the glockenspiel, the celesta can't really be heard during loud passages of music. But in the appropriate settings, its delicate tones create magical moments.

The celesta sounds one octave higher than it is written. The written range is from C3 (one octave below Middle C) up to C7 (three octaves above Middle C).

Like the piano, the celesta has a damper pedal that allows the performer to sustain the notes. Because it is a keyboard instrument, it can play piano-like lines and arpeggios at a fast tempo - something the glockenspiel is incapable of.

Soft strings, flute and harp would work well as accompaniments to the celesta.
