General Information

To some degree, the piano and celesta can be considered percussion instruments. But within the orchestra, each really belongs in a class of its own. While the piano and celesta play supporting roles within the orchestra, their sonic contributions are unique.

The Piano

Range

The piano has the largest range of any single instrument. Its lowest note is the A found three octaves plus a minor 3rd below Middle C. Its highest note is C8 (four octaves above Middle C).

Almost everyone is familiar with the sound of the piano and its features - such as the damper pedal that allows all the notes to ring out. But the piano takes on a different role when it is played within the orchestra. Unless it is performing a piano concerto, where it is the center of attraction, the piano plays a supporting role in orchestral music. Its main purpose is to add reinforcement to the other orchestral colors.
