 Final Thoughts
While some instruments might sound completely out of
place in a given musical setting, it's almost impossible to write a bad
flute part. What is more of a
concern for beginning composers is the importance of writing a flute
part that can be heard properly above the other instruments. The flute has a delicate tone for much of
its range and you must orchestrate around this accordingly.
That's not to say that other instruments can't play while
the flute is playing. But you
must be aware of the weight and volume of other instruments if you want
the flute to be heard. Often times
the flute part is not meant to
be the loudest part heard.
Just remember, the more you compose and experiment with
orchestration, the more familiar you will become with balancing the many
colors of the orchestra.
