General Information

The flute is the quintessential woodwind instrument. This statement might sound somewhat amusing, considering that the modern flute is made of metal, not wood. But its pure, clean, wind sound blends with any instrument and can play in any style. That's why the flute sound is as desirable in jazz, pop and folk music as it is in classical music.

The flute can play gorgeous melodies, ornamental counter lines, or simply hold a note as part of a woodwind chord. It is the most agile of all the woodwinds and is often used to play in unison with fast moving violin lines. Although we will discuss some flute techniques, there are no fancy tricks required to bring the flute alive. The flute's simple sound is its most desirable quality.
