Alto Flute

The alto flute has a deeper sound than the flute. It has the same written range as the flute, but sounds a perfect 4th lower than it is written. Therefore, its lowest sounding note is G3 (a perfect 4th below middle C).

Besides adding a few more lower notes to the flute range, the alto flute brings a deeper, richer sound to the flute's lower octave. This octave is weaker on the normal flute.

To hear an example of the alto flute, listen to Ancient Times in the Composition Moods section.
