Usage

Trills

Another flute technique that creates a flurry of sound is the trill.

As we've heard in the Woodwind chapter, woodwind trills bring great excitement to the music. But flutes can also perform trills that are delicate and somewhat lush. This is especially true when two or three flutes perform trills simultaneously, all trilling different notes.  Let's listen to what that sounds like:

As you can see in the score, the flutes merely trill from a C chord to a D chord. This simple harmonic move - as played by three flutes - creates quite a magical sound.
