Cello Pizzicatos Doubled by Bassoon

Most often, the cello pizzicatos are doubled by the bassoon, playing in staccato fashion:

These two sounds beautifully complement each other and are used often to bring rhythmic energy to the bass register.

As we mention in the bassoon chapter, the cellos and bassoon often play legato melodies in unison

Their similar timbres work very well together. The same could be said of the basses, who often play with the cellos, one octave lower.
