Before we begin our discussion of the cello section, listen to what the solo cello sounds like:

While a solo cello has a more fragile tone than a full cello section, its sound is more intimate.

Specific Ranges

Low Range

Let's listen to the cellos in their low range:

As you can hear, this range is often used to express ominous sounding melodies.

Mid Range

Now listen to the same melody as played in the cello's middle ("mid") range:

 Even though the melody notes are the same as before, this range produces a sweeter tone.

High Range

Now listen to this melody in the cello's high range:

You can hear that the tone is not quite as sweet. The strained sound the cello produces in this range very effectively expresses tension and drama.
