Usage

All the orchestral strings are called upon to play melodies. String tones lend themselves beautifully to expressive melodies. Yet the cellos seem to have the greatest diversity of tone colors - shifting from dark and rich to light and sweet. This next example illustrates that point:

Motion and Emotion

As we've just heard, cello arpeggios played over a wide range of notes always adds emotion and movement to the music.

The octave ending on Middle C contains the cello's sweetest sounding notes. In this range, a simple moving cello line sweetens everything around it.

While this example illustrates a Broadway-pop sound, this method of simple cello writing is applicable to all styles.
