Usage (cont.)We've heard several examples of the cello's sweet side. But the cello can sound quite menacing as well. We employ its lower octave to express those ominous moments:
StaccatoWhen playing staccato, the cello's gruff sound really stands out. For added weight, the basses can double these parts one octave lower. The cellos also have a very distinctive pizzicato sound. In this example, a cello's bright pizzicato snap is coupled with a deep bass tone:
