Varying the Chord Progression

We've now played our chord progression twice. In the second cycle (bar 5 through 8), we even added an extra chord at the end. We can continue to get mileage out of this chord progression by varying it further. Let's take another look at our progression:

If we divide this chord progression in half, we see that the first four chords create a descending pattern from the chord C. The last four chords create a descending pattern from the chord F:

To vary our progression, let's start the next section using the second half. In other words, let’s start with the F chord. But we will substitute a C chord for that last G chord in the progression:

We set up that last chord to be a C chord so that we could comfortably repeat this section again.

But we won't repeat this section exactly the same way. This time we will leave the last chord as a G chord, just as it was in the original chord progression:

We reverted that last chord to a G chord so that we could comfortably return to our original chord progression, which starts with a C chord.
