Step 1 - Choose a Chord Progression.

Choose either one or two chord progressions from among the thirteen chord progressions presented in Lesson 4.

Step 2 - Arrange the Chord Progression(s).

Examine your chosen chord progression. Repeat the chord progression for as many times as it sounds pleasing. This might be several repeats or just one single playing. Find ways of varying the order of chords in your chord progression, or move on to another chord progression.

Step 3 - Add a Melody.

Add a melody over your chord progressions. Create your melody by using notes primarily found in the chord progression itself. Establish a rhythmic pattern in your melody that can be used often throughout the composition.

Step 4 - Analyze Your Melody.

Examine your melody and decide if it really goes somewhere. Your music should have a feeling of growth. By creating a rhythmic pattern that you can repeat in your melody, you quickly establish a sense of structure. This anchors your melody while giving you some freedom in choosing your melodic notes.
