Conclusion

Let's go back to the beginning again, but not exactly the same way as before. We'll compose a slight variation that will combine elements of both the first statement of the theme in bar 1, and the second statement in bar 5. Let's now listen to our completed composition:

That worked wonderfully. You can see at the end that, not only did we re-state the theme in bar 13 (one octave higher than before), but we also added some harmony to the left hand bass line:

Both of those changes helped to give the ending a fuller, grander tone.

Final Thoughts

By making these last changes, we've made the piece grow just a little more. This is the outcome we should always strive for when we are composing. Therefore, the question we must always ask is, "Does the music take us somewhere?"

In these first two "Composition 101" lessons, we not only watched five notes turn into a full blown composition, but also we witnessed each section giving birth to the following section. Like any birthing process, there are bound to be some difficult times getting through it. But the end results are always worth it.
