Expanding the Composition

In Lesson 1, we watched five notes turn into eight bars of music. By varying those five notes from bar to bar, we were able to extend a single musical phrase into a short composition. In this lesson, we will transform that simple musical phrase into a slightly more elaborate one. This will bring more character to the music and allow us to extend the composition even further.

Let's look at those first five notes again:

As you can hear, the melody notes are placed on top of a very simple rhythm - four 8th notes and a half note. There is nothing wrong with simple rhythms. But for this exercise, let's give that rhythm a little twist, and you will soon see how rhythmic pattens can also be used to extend compositions.
