Orchestration

A few of our instrumental choices deserve some mention. The combination of bassoon and pizzicato cellos (as heard in the first few bars), create a light comical bottom that suggests someone sneaking around on tiptoe.

Bassoon and pizzicato cellos

The triangle also plays an important role because in several instances it is almost acting as a solo. When it plays in bar 2, the only other instrument playing at that exact beat is the funny clarinet note with its grace note.

When the triangle plays again in bar 4, the only other instrument playing is the light cello pizzicato note. In both instances, the triangle acts as a way of temporarily halting the action. 2 solo violins, playing with the clarinets, provide one other comical touch starting at bar 3, beat 4.

Here, the chromatic movement in the next few beats is made to sound slightly more humorous because of the timbre of the solo violins.
