Moving the Chord

In bar 3, we modulate this chord down one whole step to Eb, making this new chord an Eb 6/9 with a major 7th. This particular chord structure – the major 6/9 chord with a major 7th – works beautifully when we move it down one whole step, as we have just done:

This movement really emphasizes the lushness of this chord – making it the perfect move for our pastoral music. In bar 5, we move back up to our original chord and, in bar 7, we modulate down a whole step again. The whole step movement of this chord has a very calm, natural and flowing feeling to it.

By bar 9, we would like to feel more of a change in our harmony. We accomplish this by moving our chord structure down a minor 3rd – from the Eb root of bars 7 and 8 - to our new root of C.  This makes our final chord the C 6/9 with a major seventh.  Even though we are constantly using the same chord structure, the minor 3rd movement of this chord creates the impression that we are using a new chord structure.
