6/9 Chord with a Major 7th

Building upon this foundation, the violas play the next 2 notes of the chord – a D and a G. These notes provide the 6th and 9th note of the F scale. This now makes our chord an F 6/9 chord:

The 6/9 chord is very common in jazz writing and adds a cool, mellow sound to an ordinary major chord.

The second violins play the top 2 notes of our chord – a C and an E. The C is the fifth of our scale and has already been heard in the cellos 2 octaves below. The E is the major 7th in the key of F. Even though it is almost 3 octaves above our root note F, we still consider it the 7th note of the F scale. Our completed chord is now an F 6/9 with a major 7th. We hold this chord for 2 bars:
