The trumpets provide strength to the orchestral sound. Although three trumpets comprise the standard trumpet section, two trumpets can be used very effectively without losing too much power.

If you have a limited budget, you can still retain some brass energy with just one trumpet, but it is not recommended. Part of the appeal of having a trumpet section is to be able to create full sounding brass harmonies. However, if you are writing very reflective music, a single trumpet backed by the string section creates a wonderful palette of sound.

Always decide the style of music you wish to create before choosing the size of your orchestra. And remember, whatever style you choose, there will always be a place for the trumpet.
