General Information

The trumpet is loud, brassy and powerful. Yet it is also tranquil, elegant and playful. It is whatever you choose it to be. The trumpet is just that versatile. Its rich, round tone adds a sparkle of color that livens up any musical moment. Yet it can also display a somber modesty.

Notation

The orchestral trumpet section commonly consists of three trumpets. When notating the three trumpet parts, two staves are used. Either the 1st and 2nd trumpets share one stave, or the 2nd and 3rd trumpets share one stave.

The trumpet is a Bb transposing instrument, which means it is written a whole step above its actual pitch. If you notate Middle C, the trumpet will actually sound the Bb just below it.

Range

The trumpet's lowest written note is F#3 (a tritone below Middle C). Its highest note varies, depending on the player. It would be advisable not to write above D6 (two octaves plus a Major 2nd above Middle C).

Note: The lowest five or six notes of the trumpet's range do not provide a pleasing sound quality. It should also be noted that jazz players can perform notes higher than our suggested written range.
