Bass Clarinet

Notation

The bass clarinet sounds one octave lower than the Bb clarinet. But since the bass clarinet is also a Bb instrument, it actually sounds an octave plus a whole step lower than it is written. In other words, a written Middle C will sound Bb2 (an octave plus one whole step below Middle C).

Range

The bass clarinet has an added note that the clarinet does not have. Therefore, the lowest sounding note is C#2 (almost 2 octaves below Middle C). It would be safe to consider the highest sounding note as Eb5 (an octave plus a minor third above Middle C).
