Low Range
The low range of the clarinet
sounds at times lusciously dark, at other times quite ominous. This range,
from E3 up to F#4, is often referred to as the "chalumeau" register.

Mid Range
In this register, the clarinet
exhibits a rich, warm, woody sound. Now listen to the same melody as played
in its mid range:
This register clearly demonstrates the clarinet's
pure, clean tone. Perhaps that is why this register is used most often.
High Range
Now let's listen to the same melody played in the clarinet's high range:
While the sound is thinner and less warm, it is still
effective when used in the right setting. It is often employed in comical
moments - providing a teasing, bratty sound.
