The basses are appropriately named. No other instrument creates as satisfying a sound in the lowest registers as the bass. While eight is the standard number of basses found in an orchestra, you can achieve an acceptable bass section sound with as few as four basses. Whether they are playing elaborate rhythmic patterns, or simple root notes, the bass part is an essential ingredient in any arrangement for full orchestra.
