Building a Melodic Minor Scale

You can create a melodic minor scale by starting with the natural minor scale. For our example, we'll use the a natural minor scale:

Simply raise the 6th and 7th notes by one half step each:

This converts the a natural minor scale into an a melodic minor scale:

Melodic Minor Scale - Descending

The descending form of the melodic minor scale is identical to the natural minor scale. In other words, the 6th and 7th tones of the melodic minor scale are lowered one half-step when descending:
