Dynamic Articulations

We can adjust the dynamics of individual notes as well. We do this by using either an accent mark or a marcato mark.

ACCENT

An accent mark (">") over a note indicates that the note should be played with a strong attack or articulation.

MARCATO

A marcato mark ("^") above a note indicates that the note should be stressed with a very strong attack. The attack for a marcato note is stronger than the attack for a note written with an accent mark.

Another distinction between a marcato mark and an accent mark is that marcato notes are played in a detached, almost staccato fashion. Listen to a musical excerpt that features both the accent mark and the marcato mark:
