Dynamic Markings

A composer uses dynamic markings to convey specific dynamic levels throughout the score. Each stave of the score has its own independent dynamic markings.

Dynamic markings are always indicated at the beginning of the composition, or at the score location where an instrument makes its first entrance:

The composer indicates dynamic changes in later portions of the composition by inserting additional dynamic markings at the appropriate location(s) in the score.

By their very nature, dynamic markings are relative. For instance, who's to say exactly how loud to play when the score says forte (i.e., "loud")? Just how loud is "loud" and how soft is "soft?"

Each dynamic marking is subject to interpretation by the conductor or performer(s) who must consider many factors in determining just how to perform the marking. In analyzing the composer's intentions, we must examine clues such as: other dynamic markings in the same composition; the style of music; the period when the music was written; and the composer's tendencies in other compositions.
