Other Percussion

Even though we use drum loops and rhythmic vamps, we can still gain additional color by adding orchestral percussion. We start in bar 1 with a very unique sound. Here we scrape the inside strings of a piano to add strange textures and overtones to the intro:

In bars 19 and 20, we add another novel sound to the mix by introducing the anvil and metallic percussion:

Anything from pipes to automobile parts can be used as metallic percussion. These percussive sounds merely accent various beats of the rhythmic vamp. Also worth noting is the xylophone, which enters in bar 24:

To add a great sense of urgency to the finale, the French horns and trumpets in bars 23-27 crescendo while the violins and xylophone complete their final race to the finish:

One final point worthy of discussion regards the use of the diminished scale. While the diminished scale provides a great vehicle for delivering all the right notes for action music, it doesn't need to be used exclusively, if at all. It should be pointed out that the violins, in bars 11-17, stray slightly from the diminished scale. This provides a nice contrast to the constant use of that scale.
