Further Usage of the Diminished Scale
In the transition section starting in bar 11, we return
to the less hectic drum loop first
heard in bars 1-2. Here the violas
and cellos offered a new diminished
scale pattern. Now in bar 12, the trumpets
join in with one of their own:
Notice that the repeated trumpet
pattern fades in volume as it plays. This technique works well with the
erratic, fleeting rhythms of the current drum
loop.
In bars 7-10, the French
horns enter with a blaring and dramatic line:
All of these notes are found in the C diminished scale.
As a matter of fact, every note that the French
horns play throughout the piece is derived from the C diminished
scale.
