Step 1 - Review Your Scales.

Review the tonal qualities of the Major scale, Natural Minor scale, Lydian scale, Pentatonic scale, Whole Tone scale and Diminished scale.

Step 2 - Choose Your Scales.

Choose two to three scales that appeal to you. These scales will not be playing simultaneously but rather, one after the other. Decide which scales go well with other scales.

Step 3 - Determine the Order.

Determine the order in which you want to hear these different scales. A natural sounding scale introduces the music calmly, such as the Major scale or Pentatonic scale. A more unusual scale would grab your attention right from the beginning, such as the Whole Tone scale or Diminished scale.

Step 4 - Compose the Melody.

After you've determined the order of the scales that you will be using, compose a melody for the piano, right hand, based on these scales. Don't force the melody. It should feel natural in relation to the scale that you are basing it on.

Step 5 - Add the Accompaniment.

Using notes from the scales you have chosen, add an accompanying part in the piano, left hand. Don't be afraid to keep the accompaniment simple.

Step 6 - Review Your Choices.

Determine if your composition feels balanced. Even though you are using several different scales, you will want your music to flow smoothly from the beginning to the end.
